2 months, 1 week ago Studio Wayne McGregor: Now Open

Our first on-site creative arts space has opened its doors

We’re thrilled that the impressive Studio Wayne McGregor has now opened its doors as the first arts organisation on campus, a welcome addition to our existing education hubs and digital spaces. As well as offering a space to create, rehearse and experiment, Studio Wayne McGregor also has two incredible community programmes which will help aspiring creatives into the industry.

Studio Wayne McGregor is the creative engine of McGregor’s life-long choreographic journey into thinking through and with the body. With an eclectic history creating cutting edge pieces, from the mesmerising Tree of Codes to his groundbreaking music video for The Chemical Brothers, Wide Open, the anticipation of what this studio will produce in 2017 is electric.

McGregor’s experiments have led him on a journey exploring various artistic forms, scientific disciplines and technological interventions. This creative approach and desire to collaborate across multiple disciplines fits perfectly into the ethos of Here East, as our CEO Gavin Poole explains:

“These studios epitomise everything we are building at Here East: collaboration, creativity, individuality. Wayne McGregor is leading the continuing eastward shift of London’s creative and cultural scene and I am looking forward to seeing the results of their collaboration with others based at Here East, and in the wider Hackney Wick community.”

Reaching out into that community and beyond, a cornerstone programme for Studio Wayne McGregor is FreeSpace, a major new artist development and community engagement programme. Through FreeSpace, Studio Wayne McGregor will offer studio space free of charge for creation, research and rehearsal time. In exchange, the FreeSpace artists will gift their time and expertise to deliver creative engagement projects within schools and communities.

Alongside FreeSpace, Studio Wayne McGregor has also launched PEER, a mentoring programme for final year vocational dance students and recent graduates. Six PEER participants will have a year-long programme of tailored interactions with Studio Wayne McGregor. This will include taking part in company classes and creative labs as well as receiving mentoring by Company Wayne McGregor dancers, to gain exposure to life as a professional dancer and develop a peer network.

The Studio will be a place for imaginative freedom where art forms cross paths with technological innovation, experience with enthusiasm and doers with thinkers. We’re honoured that McGregor and his company of dancers have joined the Here East community.
