Hello from Here East and welcome to your summer campus update! We have lots of events happening over the summer so here’s your round-up of what we have been up to on campus and everything that we have planned.
We wanted 2017 to be our ‘year of occupation’ and just over half way through the year, we are making this a reality. Here East is now 65% let and we are constantly adding to our community.
Fancy a new look? Next month you’ll be able to head on down to Bucks Barbers, opening on Canalside early August and any coffee lovers on campus will soon be able to get their caffeine fix from two new venues onsite: Coffee Works and Change Please. Change Please is a community interest coffee specialist company who will be staffing the coffee van with formerly homeless baristas.
London Tech Week 2017 and The Global Disability Innovation Summit
Back in June we welcomed Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, along with London’s top tech players to Here East for the launch of London Tech Week and the opening of Plexal – Europe’s new innovation centre.
We were also proud to be a host venue for the two-day Global Disability Innovation Summit – a unique forum for academics, disabled people, practitioners, community members, international partners, organisations and innovators to shape future debates around disability. The inspiring event brought 70 global speakers to London looking at everything from wheelchairs and wearable tech, to art, culture, charity, corporate and sport. The event was trending second on Twitter in the UK: and has already created lots of fantastic engagement, conversations and ideas.
We were delighted to announce that the global car giant, Ford, will be joining our growing community with the opening of a Smart Mobility Innovation Office. The office will develop smart solutions to modern urban transport challenges and plans to open later this year. Find out more about their plans here.
We recently partnered with Urban Makers East to curate a fabulous indoor makers market to showcase the work of handpicked local designers and makers. Keep an eye out on social media for future pop up opportunities.
This ran alongside The Great Get Together a community event in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park hosted by the London Legacy Development Corporation and the Jo Cox Foundation in tribute to the late MP.
Makers Project: Christmas at Here East
Though the sun may still be shining, we’re calling on all artists, makers, and creative shakers to design a festive installation to sit at the heart of our Steel Mill Reception space this winter. It’s a great chance for local creatives to work with us and build something extraordinary that ties together Here East’s ethos with the festive season.
This exciting commission is open to creative individuals and collaborative groups, both established and emerging, with a £2,000 budget available for the commission.
Proposal Submission Deadline: Friday 18 August 2017
Installation Date: Thursday 23 November 2017
Here East continues to hit the headlines with a number of mentions in the media:
At Here East we are working hard to make a lasting positive social and economic contribution to our local area.
This summer we’ve hosted a number of talented work experience placements across the campus with a range of young people from the local area. UCL schools’ workshops
Ahead of University College London’s arrival at Here East this September, we invited local secondary schools to come down during National Robotics Week to them a taster of what UCL will be doing on campus and how their research will impact people’s daily lives. Students were introduced to a fun and versatile little robot called the KUKA youBot, an educational research robot aimed at teaching its users. Read more about this event here.
Inspiring success: Loughborough University in London
Loughborough University in London is working in partnership with the London Legacy Development Corporation to deliver it’s ‘Inspiring Success’ employability program for the third year running on 3 and 4 July 2017.
